Did you know that roses are quite famous throughout history? The rose was used as a symbol in the fifteenth century England, where 2 factions were fighting over running the country. The House of York took the white rose as their symbol. The House of Lancaster adopted the red rose. This famous claiming of these 2 roses were known as the War of the Roses.
Then later, Tudor Henry VII went on to win the war & his marriage to a York bride. He then combined both the red & white roses, and created the Rose of England, also known as the Tudor Rose.
Another well known piece of history, is when Napoleon's wife Empress Josephine had a dream to create such a garden in their home, Malmaison. She was convinced that it should consist of roses from all parts of the world. In the nineteenth century, following the creation of the modern rose, new interest was renewed in the rose garden.
When you give a rose gift, it can make for a wonderful conversation to tell some of the old legends & stories. Whether they're justifiable or not is irrelevant - it just adds to the romantic imagination in which we've surrounded the rose.
